The Airport Extreme retails at $179. Apple stuff rarely goes on sale. (The Cisco/Linksys WRT320N seems to range from $70 to $130.) So the best Asus hardware equivalent is still considerably less expensive than the Airport. Though one cool feature I saw on a more expensive variation of Airport Extreme was the inclusion of Power-Over-Ethernet (PoE).
Jan 26, 2017 · The most powerful Apple Airport Extreme router uses a 1 GHz Broadcom processor. Concerning the DD-WRT routers sold by FlashRouters, a 1 GHz processor is fairly middle-of-the-road. As you can see above, the more powerful FlashRouters have processors well above 1 GHz. Yeah - I've tried following the instructions to set up the dd-wrt as a repeater bridge, but I don't know whether to set the IP address on the Linksys as 192.168.1.6 (as instructions dictate, but that assumes the primary rougher is 192.168.1.1), or the doing something like 10.0.1.50 (like the Airport Extreme uses). Apr 22, 2009 · I'm not that familiar with dd-wrt, but you might want to try running it as a wireless client using WPA2, see if there is an option to change it from a gateway to Router. you might have to setup a static route on each end so that way each router knows where to send the traffic from the Airport to the dd-wrt, and vice-versa. The extend feature is a proprietary one and can not be used with non-apple networks. There appear to be a very few possible exceptions, but they depend upon network trickery and very specific models of non-apple wireless routers.

The new tower style AirPort Extreme (6th generation) supports officially Time Machine to a USB drive. The Time Capsule would work as well in this situation. I had a robust network simply using a AC Airport Extreme with a couple of airport expresses in my old house. Everything was wireless. New house is been prewired with cat gigabit into almost every room:-) so the plan was to simply disable the Wi-Fi on the 3000, add my Apple APX with a 16 port gigabit switch.
